New Beginnings
New Beginnings has received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a short-term pilot Family Advocacy Project which includes both supportive services and research components. The project aims to reduce the negative effects of domestic violence on children by connecting them to community resources that will promote their well-being and resilience, assisting with school related needs, and supporting survivors in their roles as parents. New Beginnings will partner with researchers from Michigan State University to assess the impact of the project on children and families. Participating families will be referred to the project by New Beginnings and other community agencies serving survivors of domestic violence. Two Family Advocates will be hired for the duration of the project.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides mobile, short-term intensive supportive services to children and parents who have experienced domestic violence as they transition into stable housing in the community.  
REPORTS TO: Home Safe Program Director 
HOURS: 36 hours per week for 15.5 months 
COMPENSATION: $20.60 per hour, medical, dental and vision benefits; monthly paid trainings; training allowance; paid leave; life insurance; retirement contribution.  This is a non-exempt position.

Supportive Services
• Provides community-based, strengths-based, culturally sensitive and trauma-informed supportive services for a period of eight weeks to children and their survivor parents as they transition into stable housing in the community.
• Assists families in connecting with local schools, supporting parents in their interactions with school personnel to receive desired services and enhance their children’s academic achievement.
• Supports families’ sustenance of their cultural traditions, linking them to cultural or religious resources in the community if desired.
• Links youth to activities and opportunities that will showcase their skills and interests.
• Assists youth in cultivating natural mentors by identifying at least one supportive adult in the child’s life and strengthening that relationship.
• Assists children to build healthy coping skills.
• Assists children in building positive peer relationships.
• Models healthy interpersonal relationships with children.
• Provides parenting support to the adult survivor and identifies both formal and informal resources in the community that can provide ongoing support.
• Identifies community resources and supports that can enhance the family’s social and economic well-being.
• Works closely with other domestic violence agencies to ensure that families are enrolled into the project if interested and eligible, and to avoid duplication of services.
• Coordinates interpreter or ASL services for non-English speaking or deaf/hard of hearing participants.
• Ensures services provided reflect and contribute to agency efforts to promote equity and social justice. 
• Ensures that information about new families enrolled in the project is provided to researchers on a regular basis.
• Provides updated participant contact information to researchers as needed.
• Participates in research surveys and/or interviews about services provided to each family. 
Data Integrity
• Enters consistently complete, accurate and appropriate participant and service data into the agency database.
• Responds to meet data needs identified by the Program Director or data staff. 
Community Networking 
• Based on the neighborhoods/communities in which families relocate, researches community resources for the benefit of children and parents.
• Builds positive working relationships with other domestic violence agencies and community resources families will access. 
Resource Development   
• Provides program information and stories as needed by the development team to build donor support and pursue funding opportunities.  
Team Work and Professional Development
• Actively contributes to a positive team environment to ensure the collaboration needed for provision of high quality services to survivors.
• Participates in all staff meetings, Home Safe Program team meetings and agency in-service trainings as requested by Home Safe Program Director.
• Attends and documents trainings to ensure compliance with Washington Administrative Code training requirements for domestic violence advocates. 

• Commitment to the mission of New Beginnings and to the needs of youth and adult domestic violence survivors.
• Willingness to learn about and promote equity and social justice within and outside of New Beginnings.
• Experience providing support and advocacy for children who have been traumatized.  Related experience in non-domestic violence agency settings will be considered.
• Knowledge about the dynamics of domestic violence and the impact of trauma on survivors and their children.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise flexibility and creativity in supporting children and parents.
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse survivors in a welcoming, supportive, culturally sensitive manner.
• Ability to take initiative and maintain accountability to colleagues while providing services in a variety of settings.
• Experience with mobile advocacy a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to handle crises and juggle multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to maintain participant confidentiality.
• Ability to effectively network with a wide range of community service providers.
• Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
• Ability to represent New Beginnings in a professional manner to community partners and the broader public.
• Ability to use supervision effectively to gain support and enhance performance.
• Ability to engage in constructive self-care activities to manage secondary trauma.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
• Fluency in Spanish, African or Asian languages a plus.
• Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license. Access to reliable personal car a plus.
