Ventures is a Seattle-based nonprofit, founded in 1995, that empowers aspiring entrepreneurs with limited resources and unlimited potential to improve their lives through small business ownership. We provide access to business training, capital, coaching, incubation, and hands-on learning opportunities for entrepreneurs. We serve those in our community for whom traditional business development services are out of reach, with a focus on women, people of color, immigrants, and individuals with low incomes. Our ultimate goal is to support individuals to increase their income potential, achieve long-term financial stability, and provide for their families, and enrich their communities through small business ownership.

Position Overview

This position will play an essential role in shaping the future of Ventures’ retail programming and incubation strategy. It is a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on hundreds of Ventures entrepreneurs by redefining our program in response to the needs of our entrepreneurs. This role will require a proactive and creative mindset along with the ability and willingness to drive this essential work forward.


This position oversees the day-to-day management of the Ventures Marketplace (retail and e-commerce), our retail incubator and social enterprise arm of our organization. The position includes e-commerce management, leading sales and customer relations, staff management (when applicable), supporting with retail events, marketing activities, and public relations. Our retail store currently does not have retail staff, but when applicable this position will lead, motivate, and inspire a retail staff team, and work collaboratively with program staff to meet sales goals.

The Retail Manager will work collaboratively with the Director of Programs to fulfill on Ventures mission and strategic plan related to incubation services for product businesses. They will also act as the lead spokesperson and primary advocate for the Ventures Marketplace in the historic Pike Place Market and will exhibit the mission and values of the Ventures organization to the staff, Ventures entrepreneurs, customers, and community. This position will be required to work weekends.

Compensation Package

  • Pay Range: $45,000 – $51,000 per year, 40 hours per week

Sales and Customer Service

  • Creates daily, weekly, and monthly sales goals for the store;
    • When applicable, communicates sales goals with all retail staff both verbally and in other creative ways.
    • Works to increase sales transactions & average sale to maximize store profitability;
    • Handles all sales transactions accurately and efficiently;
      • When applicable, ensures all retail staff do so as well.
      • Makes the customer the top priority and reinforces this philosophy at all times;
      • Resolves customer service problems with care, judgment and in a timely manner;
        • When applicable, empowers retail staff to resolve issues independently.
        • Demonstrates excellent customer service and sales techniques to all Ventures staff and volunteers;
        • Supports with special events at the store as needed, as well as supports with Marketing, Communications and Development activities as needed;
        • Run monthly sales report and provide them to the controller and bookkeeper to ensure entrepreneurs get paid at the end of each month.

E-Commerce Management

  • Utilizing the current POS ShopKeep, manage and fulfill all customer orders including preparing packages for shipping or pick-up service;
  • Manage the physical inventory at the store and ensure new products are added to the store on a timely manner;
  • Develop creative ways to increasing and managing online sales for the store;
  • Work closely with entrepreneurs to help promote their products.


  • Work with the Communications Coordinator to create a marketing strategy to promote retail opportunities on social media outlets, direct email and other creative ways;
  • Establishes, maintains, and improves store policies and procedures as needed;
    • When applicable, ensures that all current policies and procedures are documented and that staff are trained in all policies and procedures.
    • Opens and closes physical store accurately and efficiently;
      • When applicable, trains staff on proper opening/closing procedures.
      • Maintains awareness of store, staff, and customers at all times by monitoring the sales floor and ensuring that the sales floor is adequately covered;
      • Develops and implements adequate security and emergency procedures;
        • When applicable, educates staff ensures that they are following set policies and procedures.
        • When applicable, prioritizes and delegates daily tasks and on-going store projects to staff and volunteers;

Support Ventures entrepreneurs

  • Creates and deploys entrepreneurs ordering;
  • Oversees the inventory intake process;
  • Creates and maintains a close relationship with each entrepreneur;
  • Develops strong communication with each entrepreneur about their products, business needs or concerns;
  • Revises and implements the entrepreneur intake-graduation process;
  • In collaboration with the Data Analyst, develops consumer’s survey about products and provide data and feedback back to each entrepreneur;
  • Reports coaching time spent with entrepreneurs in OTTO (client database) in a timely manner.

Staff Management (when applicable)

  • Leads all recruiting, training, supervising and staff development activities for retail store staff;
    • Recruiting: Maintains p to date position description for Sales Associate and leads hiring process with the support of the Director of Programs.
    • Training: Creates and delivers a robust training plan for new Sales Associates, including training on emergency procedures, Point of Sale, and basic store operations, including maintaining an Employee Handbook for store and Operations Manual.
    • Supervision: Ensure staff give great customer service and understand sales goals on a daily basis, uses coaching model to coach employees, and addresses performance issues in a timely manner.
    • Staff Development:
      • Works on continued development and mentoring of all store staff, providing opportunities for growth and professional development, and encouraging development of the professional skills necessary for advancement
      • Helps staff set performance goals, realize these goals and build their professional skills
      • Performs annual performance reviews for Sales Associates
      • Ensure the employee has a complete and accurate job description (set at the time of hire or promotion, when conditions change significantly, or when reviewed annually as part of the employee’s performance review);
      • Ensure proper record keeping for human resources, including offer letters, timesheets, position change forms, leave requests, and new staff forms;
      • Ensures that the store is properly staffed and stays within the established payroll budget, creates monthly staff schedule, performing ongoing revisions as needed;
      • Ensures compliance with health and safety policies and laws;
      • Leads monthly staff meetings for retail staff;
      • Works collaboratively with Development Coordinator on the integration of volunteers.

Desired Qualifications

  • Two to three years of progressively responsible retail management experience required.
  • One year experience with trends and industries in e-commerce preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and ability to cultivate a warm and welcoming atmosphere for customers; in-person and online.
  • Demonstrated success and experience in leading and supervising employees. This position will supervise a team when applicable.
  • Dependable, responsible, and embodies a winning attitude of being positive, warm, friendly and enthusiastic.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to navigate a retail point of sale system, e-commerce site, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • An appreciation for artisan goods and to learn about our entrepreneurs and their products.
  • Experience working with diverse, vulnerable communities and be able to interact professionally and compassionately with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, income levels, etc.
  • Written and verbal fluency in English required.
  • Written and verbal fluency in Spanish desired.

Physical Demands

  • The employee must be able to operate a computer and other office equipment, speak and listen on the telephone, and accurately see and interpret columns of numbers. The employee will be able stand for long periods of time and be able to move and pick-up packages heavier than 20lbs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • When applicable, this position will supervise a retail team of 2-4 staff members.
